WHERE TO SEE NASH'S PURBECK PAINTINGS

The best way to see the paintings is, sadly, in books. Many of the watercolours are still in private hands and most of the oil paintings, and many other watercolours, are in galleries all over the world. Almost every major gallery in the UK has a work by Nash and most of these galleries now have web sites listing their collections. Of course, the likelihood of the work you want to see being on display is remote. A phone call or email before you go will avoid disappointment.

By far the best place to see paintings by Nash is at Tate Britain. They have 30 works, including the famous war painting of 1940-1, Totes Meer , and, from Purbeck, Landscape from a Dream. They also have many of his prints and, in the archive, his photographic collection.

The UK Government Art Collection own Event on the Downs and Worth Matravers. This means that the paintings are likely be hanging in a government building in the U.K. or an Embassy abroad. Exhibitions of works from the collection are occasionally held.

The Imperial War Museum have many paintings by Nash from the First and Second World Wars including Under the Cliff, which has a shot down German plane under a very Ballard-like cliff.

The County Museum, Dorchester has the watercolour Ballard from Scar Bank and a pencil sketch of Maiden Castle.

The Museum, Bristol has Folly Landscape.

The Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford own the watercolour Ballard Down painted while Nash was at Whitecliff Farm.

Leeds Museum and Art Galleries have about a dozen Nash works but none from Purbeck.

The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge own 10 paintings by Nash.

Raider on the Shore is at the Art Gallery and Museum, Kelvingrove in Glasgow.

York City Art Gallery own the famous Winter Sea (Dymchurch).

The Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester have Stone Forest (Lulworth).

Environment for Two is in Canada, at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton, New Brunswick.
